It may be so that children are being told to focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects rather than art for better career prospects, but art still has a magic of its own.
Art is an important part of a play school in Kolkata. Rather, it ought to be. Children nowadays are taught to be logical and solve problems but did you know that an exposure to art can help foster creative problem solving skills in children of any age?
Art is an abstract concept. What is considered “art” for one person need not necessarily be “art” for another. Yet, when we look at art, be it a painting or a mural or a sculpture, we are moved in our soul in an inexpressible way.
In today’s blog, we will talk about why art education is important in primary schools.
Here are some specific reasons why we believe that art is an essential part of holistic development in a child.
There are no laws in art. Perception, personal creativity, ethos, sentimentality, and so many other factors go into the creation of works of beauty. As we mentioned before, what’s pleasing to one person’s senses may or may not be pleasing to another person’s. However, in general there exist some concepts which are universal. Children are taught these basic concepts and then given full freedom to express their creativity.
Art is a very sensual subject, at least at the primary school level. Children develop motor skills as they use tools to cut, shape, glue, paint, colour, draw, shade, etc. Their motor skills are developed and refined. They pick up on how much pressure to apply with a pencil and how to make strokes, lines, etc. With art, children’s motor skills are strengthened.
Children who learn art can visualise much better than those who do not have any interest in the subject. They are able to use their imagination and the skills that they have picked up in art class and effectively use it in subjects like geometry, physics, and mathematics.
Creating a work of beauty at the play school in Kolkata level requires children to focus. With picking up a skill like drawing, children have to bring their whole mind to the table. Even the slightest mistake can ruin the work. Hence, focus is improved.
Little Scholars, insists on an art education for children so that they can grow holistically. We must not ignore the fact that some children are very talented in art at the play school level and they should be encouraged.
We all view the world differently. Art is an expression of that viewpoint.
